Wood fences and fascia in Jacksonville take a beating: ground moisture, irrigation overspray, shade that never dries, and termites where they get a foothold. The default sales pitch in some markets is “replace the whole run.” Repair-first is usually smarter — and cheaper — when posts are still solid and only boards, a gate, or a stretch of fascia has gone soft.

Inspect before you price a full replace

Checking the post near grade tells you a lot. If the post is firm and the concrete or setting still holds, you can cut out bad pickets or rails and sister or replace those pieces. If the post spins, crumbles, or the rail connections have failed, that bay needs new material. Same logic on fascia: soft spots get cut back to sound wood; painting over rot is a temporary disguise.

What “repair-first” usually covers

Board swaps, gate hardware and sag fixes, post sistering or selective post replace, and fascia / soffit edge repairs tied to what we find. Minor fence repairs are quoted after we inspect the damaged wood — materials and length drive the price.

Wash can clean a fence that is still structurally fine. Soft or pressure wash (matched to the wood) is not a substitute for replacing soft members.

When replace is the honest answer

Long runs with most posts failing, fences past their design life with no salvageable line, or HOA rules that force a uniform new look can push you to replace. Even then, you should know why — not because the first visit defaulted to maximum scope.
